Chicken fit for the Bento: Sweet & sour red wine vinegar chicken

I am so very fascinated by the Japanese Bento art (I think it well and truly deserves to be called art!), and thankfully there are a gazillion Bento blogs out there to satisfy my Bento addiction as I don't quite have the patience to practise the art myself.

This recipe is from one of the always so inspiring Bento websites called Just Bento. Unbelievably quick and easy, it is perfect for not just your lunch box but also as a delicious weekday dinner.

Sweet & Sour Red Wine Vinegar Chicken
(adapted from Just Bento)

500g chicken breasts
olive oil
black pepper, salt
corn flour
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp five spice powder
5 tbs red wine vinegar
2 tbs light soy sauce

Cut the chicken into pieces and season with salt and black pepper. Dust lightly with corn flour. Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the chicken pieces on both sides until just cooked. Add sugar and five spice, red wine vinegar and soy sauce and let simmer until the sauce has just thickened and become syrupy.

  2. My only problem with bento dishes is that they are pretty small. I couldn't have a mini version of something that looked this good!

  5. Looks beautiful and is so easy to make. I'm thinking what it would be like with black vinegar rather than red as I only have black in my cupboard!

  7. I know, some bentos are so neatly and creatively arranged that you wonder how long it takes! Now, why did my school lunch box never look even remotely like that?!
