Hot Air Balloons

 
It often happens that I find a fun little project somewhere (blogs, Pinterest, you name it) and archive it for later. Some projects (time allowing) I try immediately, others I linger for longer and some never get done (or don't work out at all - there are quite a few of those as well). This cute mobile caught my attention and I wanted to give it a go. I didn't even know I like hot air balloons so much! I used thin felt to sew the balloons and added decorations (ribbon, stars and some felt bunting). The original model uses wine and champagne bottle corks for the baskets, but since I didn't have any at hand I decided to weave the baskets myself. It was a little time consuming, but easy. I just used pieces of cardboards and normal twine and attached the baskets in to the balloons. This is a great project for a child's room or just as a colourful decoration for summer.

Study Revamp

 
I'm always moving things around in our home, much to my husband's frustration. I've now taken down my desk in our large study room (his desk is still there) and replaced it with this Normann Copenhagen shelf unit I bought a couple of months ago. After opening my online shop, I needed room for packaging material and some of the stock (most of the stock is still stacked away in cupboards). I also love the visual inspiration open shelves provide; they work much like a mood board for me and I'm always changing things according to whatever inspires me at the moment.

I love the look of pure white candles in a glass jar. I know it's very simple and nothing extraordinary, but to me it's as pretty as any design object. Wooden bread boards and wooden cups are also available on the store.

It is almost time...



...for gingerbread


150ml treacle
170g raw caster sugar
250g organic, unsalted butter
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 teaspoons ground ginger
3 teaspoons ground bitter orange (optional)*
1 1/2 teaspoons ground clove
1/4 teaspoons ground pepper
2 free-range, organic eggs
2 teaspoons baking soda
520g plain flour**

* as far as I'm aware, ground bitter orange (spice) is not available in Australia.

  Recipe from Kotiruoka

1. Boil syrup, sugar, half the butter and spices in a saucepan. Turn off the heat, add rest of the butter in small cubes and stir until melted. Leave to cool.

2. Add eggs and baking soda-flour mixture. Stir until smooth, then refrigerate (cover the bowl with a cling wrap) for 8-12 hours.

3. Roll the dough (it is easier to work the dough in small batches) to a thin (2-3mm) disk. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place on baking trays lined with baking paper. Bake in 175C for about 10 minutes, cool on a wired rack. Store in an air-tight container (in the freezer if you're in the Southern Hemisphere).

Recently


My apologies for the unintended blog hiatus; I've been quite busy with work and visiting relatives in recent weeks. Incase you've missed them, here are some snapshots I've posted on Instagram lately.


Since we've had the most amazing spring weather so far, we've taken the opportunity to fire up the barbie a few times. I love simple veggie skewers drizzled with oil and a cob of corn brushed with olive oil and tamari.


I've found a bit of time to do sewing again. Mr Penguin is the first of many in the penguin family I'm planning to make. Pattern and instructions can be found here.

The bunny family is also growing. The smaller one is desperately trying to measure up.

I managed to save two agapanthus buds that were snapped off by the mischief playful cockatoos. They've left the rest of them alone, thankfully!



Last, but not least, I am working on (finally) launching my online store in the coming weeks.
